Acropolis is the central historical site of Athens, Attica, and the whole Greece. For more than 20 years, this historical site has been on the UNESCO World Heritage List. With its gracefulness and huge construction, this monumental complex of buildings will literally take your breath away. At the time of its greatest fame, it was the cultural and religious centre of Athens.

Given its strategic position, in ancient times and in the MIddle Ages, Acropolis was a fortress - you can see the remains of the ancient ramparts till nowadays. The access to the fortress was provided by a monumental marble Propylaea staircase with a gateway of five entrances that were closed at night.

The greatest construction boom occurred during Pericles’ rule when Athens reached the peak of its political and economic power. At that time, Acropolis was dominated by the statue of Pallas Athena - the protector of the city made by the famous sculptor, Phidias, from gold and ivory.

Parthenon, a site that was also sacred to Athena, started to be constructed at 447 BC. Another significant temple is the Erechtheion Temple (built 421-406 BC.). On its northern side, the roof of the entrance hall is supported by 6 statues of charming female figuers - carytids.
