The Ancient Agora, representing a market due to its significance, used to be a trade centre of the city, yet it also served for political and cultural purposes far beyond the city limits. It bears the marks of different periods of Greek history, and so you can encounter there historical sites starting from the Stone Age, but also a church from the 11th century. In the 5th century BC, the Theseion Temple or Hephaisteion was built to pay tribute to the god Hephaestus and the patron saint of the city of Athens. Despite being more than 2.5 thousand years old, it has been preserved in an incredibly good state, including the statues of both gods. One of the less famous sites is the Monument of the Eponymous Heroes that used to be an incarnation of ten heroes represented by bronze statues of which the pedestals also served for placing public announcements and notices. Among the other constructions, you can find the Tower of the Winds (sundial and water clock),  the Bouleuterion (the place where the city assembly held its meetings), Mitropoli (a cathedral dating from the 19th century), Hadrian’s Library, a mosque, Tholos (the place of residence of the city councillors), and other.
