The river Acheron flows out from the underground near Parga in the Epirus region at the ancient Necromanteion Oracle and continues up to the Acherusia Lake. In the place where it flows out from the rocks, it forms a narrow gorge that was one of the entries to the Hades’ underworld.  The old Greeks believed that it was Charon who carried souls of the dead across the rivers Styx and Acheron
