Aristotelous Square
The Aristotelous Square (Plateía Aristotélous) is one of the main Thessaloniki squares. it is situated in the western part of the centre, stretching from the water front boulevard of Leofóros Níkis to the north across the Tsimiski street to another arterial road, the Egnatía street. The square is fringed by luxury blocks of flats - the quarter is one of the most expensive city parts. The ground floors of the houses were transformed into luxury boutiques and cafés, and especially in the lower part of the square, there are many hotels. The public space in the lower part of the square often serves for serves or political gatherings.
From the bird’s eye view, the square is bottle-shaped (its lower part parting from the waterfront at Leofóros Níkis narrows into a kind of a bottleneck), which appeared in a famous advertisment for Absolut Vodka (see http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/File:Absolut_thessaloniki.jpg).
In contrast with the luxury settings of the Aristotelous Square, you will find a maze of streets of the old market, starting (Laiki agora), starting right in one of the side street of the square, where you can buy anything, including fruits and vegetables, cheese, fresh meat, fish, spices and flowers, but also clothes and different accessories or souvenirs. You should definietely not miss out this place when visiting Thessaloniki - the incredibly varied offer of all sorts of goods, barking stallholders traying to persuade you to buy the goods they offer, and an incredible mess (including buckets with strong smelly rests of meat) stray dogs and cats are scrambling for will leave an unforgettable impression on you.
