Dodoni in Epirus was a prehistoric and at the same time the oldest Greek oracle consecrated to the Mother Earth goddess - Gaia. The origins of the oracles are dated back to the 2nd millenium BC. Later (in 400 BC), a temple dedicated to Zeus was erected there, generously rebuilt by the king Pyrrhus in the 3rd century BC, and completed by other edifices and an imposing theatre that has been preserved till nowadays. The place was further reconstructed under the rule of Philip II of Macedon and the emperor Augustus. in 31 BC.
