Kedrinos Lofos
Kedrinos Lofos is a wood hillock above Thessaloniki (situated in the east from Ano Poli and the Acropolis); sometimes also being called the Seih-Sou Forest. It is a popular place for a trip of the Thessaloniki inhabitants who go there for a picnic in the nature especially at the weekends, or just for a walk, since Thessaloniki itself doesn’t really offer too much peace and green vegetation. Along the main street leading to the forest, there are a few cafés and tavernas; there is a beautiful view on the city, and also a natural amphitheatre (Theatro Dasous – which could be translated the best as a theatre in the forest) where different concerts and performances are held.
There is also a zoo, or more precisely a forest park with runs for various species of the artiodactyl family Cervidae, different kinds of birds, a pack of wolves, a flock of sheep, among others. The place looks rather dismally, and so it makes one think whether the animals are taken care of as they should - at my last visit, most animals were apparently starved, the feeding-racks were totally empty, some of the animals were ill or injured, and except one tipsy man sitting at the main entrance, there were no other employees to be seen. We saw a huge stray dog running around that took out a large bone from a bush and started to gnaw it, and later we saw it near a little pond with duck of which he managed to catch one and drag it away to a near bush. After about two hours we spent there we were leaving with quite contradictory feelings...
