Thessaloniki Waterfront
Thessaloniki is a seaside city - it is situated on the coast of the Thermaic Gulf (Gulf of Salonika, Macedonian Gulf) The city’s waterfront can be divided into two parts: one of its parts stretches from the port on the western edge of Thessaloniki city centre up to Leukos Pyrgos (White Tower). It is formed by a busy promenade on the Leoforos Nikis Avenue lined by an array of cafís, bars and dicsos that come alive mainly at night and where the inhabitantsof Thessaloniki have fun till the early morning hours. The second longer part of the waterfront continues from the Leukos Pyrgos Avenue up to the Megaro Mousikis concert hall – this part is much more peaceful, surrounded by gardens and flowerbeds, with the city inhabitants going there to have a rest or practice sports (there are many sports grounds around, illuminated till late at night).
There are often different markets held on the place, yet the central point of all activities is the Leukos Pyrgos Avenue, which becomes extremely lively especially in the evening and night hours. There are also several boats anchoring in close proximity after dark, enticing passers-by to go for a boat ride along the coast and watch the illuminated Thessaloniki city centre from the distance. The entrance for the boats is for free but you are supposed to order some of the beverages offered for prices much higher than usual. Despite that it is an attraction frequently used not only by tourists but especially by the locals.
