Church of Hosios David
Altough this little church is located a bit aside from the other significant monuments attracting crowds of tourists, it is definitely worth visiting, even if it were only for its location. It can a bit difficult to find it since it is really well hidden in the maze of crooked streets, and when you do discover it, in the first moment you are not sure whether you are in the right place (despite the sign on the gate) - you find yourself in a courtyard full of flowers with a groups of old women in black talking and sitting at a table under a charming bell tower in a hot afternoon, and there is no suggestion that the small building on your left hand is a church. After some hesitation, one of the grannies will let you in - it should be remarked that ladies should have their shoulders covered, but if you have arrived there in the hot summer and have no scarf or something with you, the old lady will give you some stinky apron, but with this you’re still not done! Then she will take you to the interior of the church where you will be suprised by complete darkness, with only a few rays of light falling from the small side windows. But the granny will disappear in some lumber-room to put on several lights according to the logic ‘the more she likes you (= you speak Greek and are correctly dresed), the more light). Then she will give you an explanation concerning the mural paintings (yet based on the above mentioned, it can happen you won’t see them well), and if you speak Greek, the old lady will explain everything in Greek - not really caring about wheter you are a native speaker or not, she will just jabber something; and in case you don’t speak Greek, you will listen to an explanation in English, yet this time lady won’t care that her English is basically incomprehensible. Then when she sees you out back to the flower courtyard, she will collect one euro from you, although the entrance to all the Thessaloniki churches is for free. Despite all that, I would warmly recommend you to climb to the acropolis (which can be quite demanding especially during summer), searching for the little church and its visit - for me personally it was one of the most beautiful experiences at my first visit of Thessaloniki, and I always lke to come back, and not only for the magic granny.
