The place of pilgrimage - the Monastery of Saint Gerassima (Agios Gerassimos) where all those yearning for spiritual contemplation are heading, can be found inthe village of Omala near the town of Valsamala, really close to the centre of the island. Saint Gerassimos who founded the island on the place of the original sanctuary dedicated to the Virgin Mary is the patron saint of the island. Although he lived inthe 16th century, people still didn´t forget him (maybe because of his miracles and meritorious deeds when healing the ill) and they celebrate the anniversary of his death till nowadays. During the celebrations, you will see plenty of delicious dishes and wine, while the generally joyful atmosphere is completed by music and dance. The interior of the monastery is richly decorated and the premises under it are hiding a prayer cave.
