In the furthermost point of the Athos peninsula you can still access without having a permit (where women can go as well), there lies the town of Ouranopolis with the Tower of Prosforion rising on the beach, built by the monks. This interesting edifice from the 14th century is one of the peninsula landmarks and served as a point of defence against the ennemies. It is a part of a whole defence system pertaining to one of the monasteries. During a century, it underwent several restorations and changed its appearance, hit by a devastating earthquake in the 19th century which damaged it a lot. Yet the tower was restored and today it is the best preserved one on the Chalkidiki peninsula.
