Mount Athos
The most significant of the Chalkidiki monasteries are those on the Athos peninsula, i.e. the eastermost of the three spikes of the imaginary trident of Poseidon. It is a pity that only very few can enter those unique and richly decorated monastic edifices, yet even from the outside there is a lot to see. There are regular trips being organized from the place ordinary mortals can set foot in - the town of Ouranopolis. The local landscape abounds in the unique beauty of the wooded forests in which the architectural jewels of the monastuc buildings shine like a pearl. If you are patient and seriously interested in the monastery, you may apply for a permission to visit the area well in advance. Women are completely forbidden to enter the place - the monastery rules have been effective for many centuries and are still strictly observed.
