The beautiful cave formation of Petralona is waiting for its visitors at the height of 300 m above sea level in the are of the Katsika mountain in the east part of the Chalkidiki peninsula, near the capital of Polygyros. It is in this limestone cave hollow that the remains of the ancient ancestors of the islanders from the Stone Age were discovered, e.g. bone tools and fossils. Most of those specimens can be seen in the local Archaeological Museum but the biggest attraction is the skull and the bones of a Neandhertal man, allegedly the oldest man in Europe who lived about seven thousand years ago. And he was not there alone for sure - the rock interior was hidiing profusion of prehistoric animals like birds, beasts or rodents. One of the oldest fires, if not the very first one, was lit right there. Besides the remembrance of the ancient inhabitants, the cave is adorned with impressive beautiful coloured dripstones of weird shapes. The cave can be accessed daily.
