Anavatos, a village lying a bit less than 20 km from the Chios capital, belongs to the local most significant historical sites. It stretches on a rock in the height of 450 m and it can be accessed from one place only as it served a point of defence against the pirates. The abandoned settlement from the Middle Ages surrounded by wild nature has persisted in quite a good state till nowadays, preserving a great part of its then appearance. From the original four hundreds of rough stone houses, you can see an olive oil production plant, a church, a school, and houses of the vilage inhabitants.
