Monastery of Nea Moni
Nea Moni, a mediaeval monastery, is a monumental edifice amidst wild nature being part of the UNESCO World Heritage List. The religious jewel was built in the middle of the 11th century, i.e. in the era when its main initiator and benefacot, Constantin IX did not live any more and so he could not see its dream work in its final shape. Due to the frequent raids and the general fear of the ennemies’ invasion, the monastery was surrounded by a defence wall and guarded by a watchtower. Its interior is decorated with marble and particularly rare mosaics. Despite being hit by bloody raids of the Turkish and an earthquake, the monastery of Nea Moni has been preserved in an extraordinarily good state. It can be found in the very heart of Chios about 10 km from the capital.
