Archaeological Museum
This modern multi-storey museum can be found near the centre of the island capital, in the direction of the part of Garitsa. The museum gathers exhibits from all eras of the rich Corfu history. You can see there even thousands of years old objects including tombs, sculptures or coins. The archaeological finds cover the era from antiquity and Roman dominion, the era of first settelements till the Hellenistic and Roman eras. The most remarkable gem of the museum collection is the shield from the Temple of Artemis from the 6th century BC, depicting the mythical Meduse, one of the three Gorgons. Its frightening appearance with snakes instead of hair and wings on her back looks really impressive. On her side, you can see her sons, the giant Chrysaor, and the winged stallion, Pegasus. A legend has it that the one who looked at her face turned into stone. Around her, you will find different scenes from mythology. There is also the supreme god, Zeus, and the one-eyed giant, Cyclops. There are more finds from the same era in the museum, including one of the most significant ancient animal statues - a stone lion, and many more.
