Kerkyra: New Fortress
The new fortress was built by the Venetians in the 16th century in the place of the original port. Its construction took 13 years. Throughout centuries, the building was completed by new elements depending on who was governing the island at that time. Although the New Fortress was built only a few decades later, there are much more modern elements on it, making it a true architectural jewel.
In the premises of the fortress, you can see the historical quarters of Brittish soldiers, but also a more peaceful Museum of Ceramics. In the underground, there are many corridors tempting especially for the adventurous ones as they look quite dark and gloomy.
On the fortress, you can also savour a charming view of the surrounding landscape with dark blue sea, azure sky, and the coastal part of the town intertwinned with greenery. If you are lucky, you can visit some of the cultural events held regularly, like a concert or a theatre performance.
