Kerkyra: Old Fortress
The Old Fortress (Palaio Frourio), or the old Venetian fortification, is located in the island capital of Kerkyra. Its construction on the foundations of the former old fortification began in the 16th century under the Venetian rule, and lasted about 50 years. Its two peaks (korifes in Greek) even gave the name to the island. Around the fortrees, a moat of Contrafossa was built which can still be seen there nowadays, although it only serves as a port for boats and yachts. Under the British rule, there were even barracks for the Britih soldiers and a military hospital. There also used to stand a drawbridge making the fortress completely inaccessible. Today there is a firm bridge so that all the visitors could enter the fortress and admire this historical site.
In front of the entrance, you will be welcomed by a marble statue of the significant German marshal, Schulenburg, who showed his bravery in 1716 when defending the island against Turkish troops. In the premises of the fortress, there are some state institutions like archives or a library. Besides that, different cultural events and concerts are held in the place. The fortress offers splendid views of the surroundings, and on the contrary: from the surroundings there is a fascinating view on the lofty fortress breathing with history.
