Falassarna
Falassarna
The ancient port town of Phalassarna bylowas founded in the period between the 5th and 4th century BC, being abandoned later. Due to the tectonic movements in the 4th and 6th century AD when the Cretan coast dropped by about 7-9 cm into the sea, the large port in Phalassarna ended up on dry land and so it couldn´t be used for ship transport any more. You can find there remains of ancient buildings, port wharfs and tombs in the rocks. To see the archaeological finds, there is an about 1.5 km long stone path from Phalassarna amidst fields and olive trees (the finds are not fenced in).
Location
The archaeological site of Phalassarna can be found in the north-east of Crete on the Gramvusa peninsula, about 20 km east of the town of Kissamos.
