Itanos

Itanos are the remains of an ancient town with two early Christian basilicas. Very close to the site, there is also a nice beach, or several small sandy beaches to be precise. The place is very popular for diving - you can supposedly see the remains of the edifices on the seabed.

In the surroundings, there are banana plantations, so if you are lucky, you can buy Cretan bananas. Near the vineyards, you can buy sweet grapes and cold water (if you ask for it - learn at least some basic vocabulary in Greek). Otherwise the landscape in this part of Crete is quite parched and several kilometres long walks with a backpack are only for fools or true adventurers.

Location

Itanos can be found on the easternmost tip of CRete about 25 km from Sitia. Passing the turn-off to the palmy beach of Vai, continue driving 2 more kilometres on the tarmac road, and here you are!
