Kommos
Kommos is a long sandy beach with fine sand and a very gentle slope into water. The beach is wide enough for both sunbathing and various water pleasures, and given its length, it is also suitable for long walks - from Kommos you can walk up to some of the tavernas on the beach, the village of Kalamaki (about 3 km far). Only 10 m from the beach, you will find the archaeological site of the Minoan town of Kommos. The Kommos is often visited by the tourists staing in Mátala, offering a calm and interesting alternative to the busy resort. From Kommos, Mátala can only be accessed through the interior (it is impossible drive on the coast due to high cliffs). Yet if you are active and an experienced diver (there are strong sea currents in the place), those cliffs between Mátala and Kommos are also said to be full of sealife - fish, starfish and crabs, among others.
