The Valley of the Dead (Kilada tou Nekron) is a beautiful canyon connecting the village of Zakros and the relaxed holiday resort of Kato Zakros. Near Kato Zakros , the wide delta of the canyon opens up in front of the fourth largest Minoan palace on Crete Palace of Kato Zakros. The footpath passe through the bottom of the canyon, and besides the nice scenery and high rock walls, there is one more interesting thing - high in the walls there are caves that served as burial sites in the Minoan era. During the winter and spring months, the path through the canony is often flooded and not passable. Otherwise it takes about 2-3 hours to walk through the 8 km long canyon. The walk is really undemanding and can be done even as a family trip with small children.
