Fortezza Venetian Fortress
Fortezza, a vast complex of fortifications from the 16th century, is the main landmark of Rethymno. Originally it was supposed to serve as protection of the town inhabitants but due to the unfortunate tactics of its defenders, it was seized within one day. In the fortress, you will find former ammunition storages, a hospital, a cathedral, and rainwater tanks. From the fortress courtyard, you can enter the Mosque of the pasha Imbrahim. After years of fierce fighting with Turkisn and later German occupiers, lots of ramparts and Turkish constructions were damaged - only a small part of the large fortress complexes with huge bastions have been preserved. From the fortress ramparts placed at the height of 30 m above the sea, there is a beautiful view on Rethymno in all its beauty. In one part of the fortress premises, music festivals are held.
