Moni Arkadi
Moni Arkadi is the most famous bastion of resistence against Turkish occupation, built on a plateau in the foothills of Ida. In November 1866 during the siege, the Cretans let the Turkish soldiers enter the premises of the monastery, blowing up the powder mill at the same time. During this suicide attack, about one thousand of the defenders died, mostly women and children, together with thousands of occupiers. In the premises of the monastery, you will find a museum and an ossuary. Every year at the anniversary of the event, spectacular celebrations are held in the courtyards.
