Moni Hrissoskalitissas
Hrissoskalitissa - Golden Staircase - originally a women’s monastery (today you will find one monk and one nun living there) was built in the 13th century. It resembles a fortress, witht he traces of its conquering by the Germans during the World War II still being visible on the white walls. Like the Moni Preveli monastery, it served as a shelter for the allied troops. Later it was occupied by the Germans who used it as a prison. In the chapel of the monastery, there are 90 stairs of which one is golden but only those who are without sin will see it. From the gallery around the chapel, there is a beautiful view on the sea and down at the entrance, you will find a small souvenir shop.
