Moni Katholiko
The Moni Katholiko Monastery is located almost in the northernmost part of the Aktoriri peninsula about 1 km behind the Gouvernetou Monastery. The remains of the monastery can be accessed only on foot. Moni Katholiko is considered to be the oldest monastery on Crete - it was built as early as in the 11th century and inhabited for about 500 years. After the incessant pirate attacks, the monks finally abandoned the place in the 16th century. The path to it is well-maintained - it is rather a wide artificial pavement. Approximately in the middle of the path, you will find the cave of Arkoudiotissa, sometimes also called Bear Cave (according to the shape of the stalagmite in the middle of it). West of the monastery, you will find another cave which is quite long and deep. If you are brave enough, you will get to its end after about 10-20 minutes. From the MOni Katholiko Monastery, you can continue a bit further, arriving at the remains of an ancient port after about 500 metres.
