Homer Tomb
Probably everyone learned about Homer at school, so if you still remember something from the lessons of history or literature, you can have a think about why the legend on Homer’s remains, buried on the very island of Ios, is so significant. Homer is one of the most important artists of the antiquity and literature in general. He is the author of the famous epic poem of Iliad and Odysseus, fascinating stories suffused with adventure and mythology. Homer himself was a part of many legends, too. It is said that Ios was where his mother was born, and so in his declining years, he decided to spend his last days in the palce that was so close to the heart of his mother. According to another legend, he was killed by the locals after he failed to resolve their ingenious riddle. Despite the proofs of the authenticity of Homer Tomb are not 100% confirmed, as they are more assumptions and conjectures, this shouldn’t spoil this beautiful mystical legend.
The tomb can be found in Plakoto in the very north of Ios Island. If you want to make there an all-day trip, you can go walking or on a mortobike over fertile green valleys, passing by olive groves and the vineyards of Pano Kambos up to Plakoto.
