Paleokastro or ‘the old castle’ is a witness of the ancient times when there were dangerous pirates raging on the seas, arriving at the coast of the Greek islands to pillage them with no mercy. That is why the locals built castle fortifications to protect themselves against these bloodthirsty raiders. You can find the remains of the cruel medieval era in the east part of Ios island close to the coast. Some parts of the castle were built as early as in the 10th cenruy, including the marble remnants of the ornamentation and a Byzantine chapel. Nonethelles most of this monument has disappeared forever in the Aegean Sea where its walls and stones have fallen.
