Othos
Othos village
The village was founded in the Middle Ages by the inhabitants of Afiartis running away from the pirates to the mountains. Apart from the main parish church on the main street, you will also find there a small museum wiht a typical rural interior.
In the Church of Kimisis in the middle of the village, you can see an amazing floor made of pebbles. Close to the church, there spews a spring which is said to have healing effects. The bust next to the spring represents the folklorist M. Nouaros, a native of Othos, who left his vast work on the history of the island, the habits of its inhabitants and the local dialect. Only a few steps far, you will find the small Jannis Chapsis Gallery, the famous lyre player and painter well-known for his naive paintings.
Near the church, you can visit a shop selling home-made wine. If you get hungry, visit some of the local tavernas.
Places of interest:
- little church of Agios Georgios Vasson hidden amidst the greenery under Othos. In 1806, first school on the island was founded in the monastery premises. It was the clergyman Nathaniel from Aperi who contributed to the restoration of decaying monastery (before you enter the courtyard, you will be asked to ring a bell).
