Agora
The place called Agora is waiting for the visitos in the Kos capital on the east coast. This significant archaeological site comes from the era between the 3rd and 4th century BC and it served as a marketplace. Building up such trade centre seemed logical since the strategic position was perfect for exchanging all kinds of goods. In some parts, you can admire precious architectural elements such as decorated columns, plasterwork and floor mosaics with scenes from nature and mythology.
The material for the construction of a new castle (the Castle of the Knights of Saint John or Neratzia) was provided by the original edifices, and so, most buildings have disappeared for good. The distaster was completed by the earthquake in the 1930s. Yet this srved as an inspiration for the archaeologists who immersed themselves in discovering the testimony of the ancient times. The result is today´s archaeological site, frequently visited by tourists from all over the world.
