Castle of the Knights of Saint John (Neratzia)
The knights castle of which only some parts can be seen nowadays, is located in the port of the island capital. It was built around the 14th century from the material found on the island, mainly of stones, but, unfortunately for the archaeologists and mankind in general, remains of the origianl ancient town were used as well. This is evidenced by the great number of preserved columns bearing signs of architecture typical for antiquity. Tourists are still amazed by the extraordinary level of advancement of the constructers of that time that can be observed on the still preservd bridge connecting two parts of the island.
Although a considerable part of the castle has disappeared for good, the parts that have been preserved still offer quite a good picture of how the original building looked like. The still standing perimeter walls, the staircase and columns make you think where the rooms, halls and corridors were situated in the past…
In the castle premises, there is also a museum where the visitors can see sculptures, plates with inscriptions and more articles.
The castle is open for the public daily except Mondays and national holidays. It can be accessed for a small fee (there are discounts for different groups of visitors). On some days the castle has a free entrance.
