With its snow-white beauty, the monastery dedicated to Madonna stretches amidst the exuberant green vegetation near the village of Kalokerines that can be found on the western coast of Kythira Island, about 10 km from the capital. It is said that the Virgin Mary showed to the people where the sanctuary had to be built, after a picture with the little Jesus had appeared in the same place several times. First a small church was built which was then renovated in the 19th century and the sacred place received its current impressive appearance. The complex is surrounded by beautiful gardens and its interiors hide precious icons, paintings, frescoes and other rare church relics. Celebrations of religious holidays are regularly held there.
