Church and Monastery of Panagia Faneromeni
The monastery of Panagia Faneromeni, the most significant monument on Lefkada, respected both by the locals and visitors, can be found a few kilometres from the capital, more precisely near the village of Frynio. There are many stories and legends on the place, tempting researchers but also the general public. According to the oldest one, today´s edifice was built on the remains of the original temple of Hera. This is maybe why the sanctuary is so worshipped. The apostle Paul is said to have dwelt there and the interior is hiding relics of the saints.
The construction of the monastery and church of Panagia Faneromeni come from the 1st half of the 17th century, yet as it usually is the case, it didn´t escape some inevitable strokes of fate being hit by a fire or Barbarian attacks. The believers have restored it though so that it could serve its original purpose.
In its interior, you can see paintings and icons by all kinds of artists. With its position, there is a splendid view on the surroundings from the monastery. In the courtyard, you can take a rest under the shade of tall pine trees with crooked trunks. The whole area is well maintained, being a true oasis perfect for spiritual contemplation.
