Hephaestia Archaeological Site
The remains of the famous town of Hephaestia, once the second largest town after Myrina, can be seen in the north-east of Lemnos Island. This religious centre was named after the then ruler, and it was a significant place of Lemnos but also its surroundings. The first inhabitants settled in this region already in prehistoric times and in the Bronze Age.
The best preserved historical site is without any doubt the ancient theatre, that has preserved its original shape during thousands of years. Despite the ravages of time, you can still see there the cascade auditorium. From the other jewels, only the remains of the sanctuary, baths and some other edifices were preserved. An ancient labyrinth is said to have been there, too.
