Poliochni Archaeological Site
This rare archaeological site can be found by all who are interested in the mystery of the past centureis in the south-east peninsula of Lemnos Island. Long ago, there used to be a whole town in the place called Poliochni. The first settlement is said to date back to the Neolithic and it is the oldest documented area inhabited by people not only in the Aegean region, but according to some experts, also in the whole Europe.
Poliochni can boast several rarities. First and foremost, it is a place where millennia are literally blending. In fact archaeologist have discovered that the findings were not from the same period, but each of them was coming from a totally different era. Later this led to the finding that the built-up area of many thousands of square metres consisted of several settlements built one on the top of another, with the individual layers bearing names of the colours of the original houses. Therefore, the oldest one is the blue settlement from the era of 4 thousands years BC, followed by the green, red and yellow settlements. While some parts were completely destroyed, other have been preserved at least in fragments; yet those give evidence of the greatly developed civilization of that time. For instance, as early as in the Bronze Age, they had a sewage system and water supply based from the wells. And the several thousands of years younger ancient setllement is said to be twice as bigger than Troja.
Another ineresting thing about this archaeological rarity is that it used to be ruled by fighting women, like the Amazons. This is what the legend says, yet this fact is also evidenced by a rock engraving displaying a woman with a bow. This matriarchal society was very advanced, with the whole territory being protected by 5 m thick walls with opening for the female archers.
