The Castle in Myrina
The huge castle in Myrina, the capital of Lemnos Island, is a part of the stone fortifications that served to protect the inhabitants and their property against pillage at the times of unscrupulous attacks. Only the view of the majestic edifice commands respect, even nowadays when only a part of it has been preserved.
The vast building raises proudly above the port, commemorating the times when it emerged, i. e. the Middle Ages. The beginnings of its construction date back to the 12th century, but for long time, there used to stand a defence fortress made by ancient builders. The works took the whole century, and later the complex was tranformed many times, depending on who ruled the island. For instance, the Turks left there the remains of a muslim mosque. Today the castle is deserted, inhabited only by does and deers, fed both by locals and tourists.
