Alyki and Hortarolimni Lakes
In the eastern part of Lemnos Island, you can find a lake region, forming a unique natural ecosystem, a home of plants, birds and other living creatures. Despite not being a lake in the true sense of the word (it is more a sea lagoon and marsh), this quite vast surface has a special importance for the whole island.
While Alyki is a shallow lagoon with salt water, Hortarolimni is a swampy area with the water being held only in the mud and not creating a water surface on the top. Between the two large ‘lakes’, there is one smaller one. During the period of drought, they form together windy salt plains with very limited or almost no green vegetation. On the contrary, during the damp period, the lakes are more difficult to access, sometimes only by the marked paths.
