The Monasteries of Meteora

Amidst the mountain limestone massifs of wierd shapes and colours, you will find the impressive Monasteries of Meteora like if they were grown into one of the rocks. Their name in Greek means ´hanging inthe air´, and its edifices can be actually found in free space, creating a very emotional and mystical scenery. No one is surprised then that they have been included in the UNESCO World Heritage List.

From the original 24 monasteries, 6 have been preserved, with the oldest one coming from the 14th century. Their placement at a dizzying height which meant an obstacle very difficult to overcome at that time was supposed to serve as a protection against the raiders, providing the peace for contemplation and studies for the monks at the same time.

This unique construction can be found near the town of Kalambaka east of the Olympic Riviera towards the interior. You should definitely visit the place, as only when looking at it and thinking how people could build such an enormous edifice 600 hundred years ago will leave you breathless.
