Mount Olympus: The highest peak of Mytikas
The Mount Olympus wrapped in legends should definitely not be missing among your trips, especially if you enjoy beautiful views and hiking in charming mountain landscape. The path to to the peak is part of the well-known track E4.
The Mount Olympus has two peaks: the main one is the 2917 m high Mytikas, while the second one, Skolio, has 2911 m. 90% of the path to both peaks is the same, it only divides in its final part. The track starts in the village of Litochoro from where you can take a taxi to the Prionia car park, then you need to continue on foot. In the car park, there is a spring with drinking water. The signposted track continues to the chalet of Refuge A at the height of 2100 m. Here you can replenish your stock (paying mountain extra charge) or also put up for the night. The walk from the car park to the chalet should take you between 2.5 and 3 hours. Then the track continues over the peak of Skala (2866 m) where the path divides to climb Scolo or Mytikas. On its final stretch, the ascent to Mytikas is much more demanding - you will need to use yellow chains in some parts. The track is signposted with red and yellow marks sprayed directly on the rock, showing the beast passable way. In some parts, there is a chasm opening under you so you will need to be especially careful. Also you will need quality shoes and warm clothes (at the height of 3 thousand metres, the weather is mostly cold and windy). Generally you need to count on the whole day for the ascent and the retur to the car park, and you should take some food and water with you.
