The Monument of Zalongo

The Monument of the Dance of Zalongo was built in memory of the death of the women and children from the village of Souli. The village was attacked by the soldiers of Ali Pasha, and while the women with the children hid in the mountains, the Turkish soldiers killed all the men. Then they started to pursue the women running away, who threwthe children from the cliff and then, singing a song and dancing, one after another threw themselves into a deep chasm out of despair.
