Olympia
Olympia, the cradle of the Olympics which are held every two years till nowadays, lies in the north-west of the Peloponnese. Its main attraction is obviousy the ancient olympic stadium for 30 thousand spectators where the able.bodied sportsmen competed in various disciplines around 700 BC. The games were very popular already by that time. Yet unlike today, the sportsmen took part in the games naked. In Olympia, you can still see other historical sites - temples amidst the flodd of cypresses, olive and pine trees, the Temple of Zeus where a huge ivory statue of the supreme god used to stand, considered to be one of the Seven Wonders of the World, the Archaeological Museum with many rare treasures uncovered thanks to the hard work of the historians, the Temple of Hera, and many statues and remains of ancient buildings and constructions.
