Lindos Acropolis
Lindos is a charming town with narrow crooked paved streets threading up to the hill with the Acropolis which is one of the most visited and most photogenic sites of the island. The monument protection assures that the architecture of the town won´t change, while the crooked streets are a guarantee of that the only traffic you will see in the town are the donkey. For those who are lazy to walk, there is a ´donkey taxi service´ which can be an interesting experience.
In the Lindos Acropolis, you can see the remains of the Doric columns of the Temple of Athena On your way to the top, you can also see an almost life-sized stone Hellenistic sculpture of boat, the work of Pythokritos from between 180 and 170 BC.
In the past, Lindos used to be a prosperous fishing village. Following this tradition, today you can choose from the tavernas and restaurants surrounding a beautiful bay and the wide choice of fish prepared in a traditional manner, as well as other Greek and continental dishes. The local women dedicate themselves to embroidery even nowadays, decorating tablecloths and fabrics using a method dated back as early as to the era of Alexander the Great.
Lindos was first settled in the Bronze Age. It became significant approximately in the 6th century BC. At that time, the town was ruled by the tyrant Cleobulus, one of the Seven Sages. You can visit his tomb on the hill lookind down to the main Lindos beach.
The Lindos acropolis is one of the most impresive archaeological sites on Rhodes. The first thing you will see on the top of the hill is medieval ramparts built by the Crusaders at the beginning of the 14th century on the remains of a Byzantine and medieval fortification. On the plain open ground, there starts a medieval staircase that will take you to the Governor´s Palace of the Crusader Castle consisting of three edifices, of which two have been preserved. Near the Governor´s Palace, you will the Church of Agios Ioannis (we don´t know exactly when it was built - some say at the turn of the 11th and 12th century, others say at the turn of the 13th and 14th century). The impressive staircase leads to the Temple of Athena from the end of the 4th century. With its well-preserved row of columns, it stands on the highest point of the Acropolis and there is a splendid view on the crystal clear blue sea and the beautiful coast in the surroundings.
Outside the town, near the St. Paul Beach, you will find an ancient theatre. The theatre with 1 800 seats was built in the 4th century BC, being carved into the rock of the Lindos Acropolis. 19 rows of the seats with the total height of 9 metres have been preserved till nowadays. The seat of the ruler can still be recognized. Originally it was the place where prayers to Dionysus took place to whom the theatre had been dedicated. To pay tribute to him, celebrations with singing, dance and wine were held there, lasting for several days.
