Monolithos Castle
Monolithos Castle
Monolithos is a place worth visiting for several reasons. The first one is the castle itself: it is a former fortress of the Knights of Malta that was built in 1476 on a 236 m high rock block in a beautiful coast area on the west tip of Rhodes. Today, you will find there only the perimeter walls, yet still the place looks monumental. Apart from the new chapel, there are also two original ones, of which one has a tumbledown vaulted ceiling through which you can see the sky and the wide sea. Getting there is very simple - you can park your car in the car park right under the castle, from where you will walk to the castle through a little forest on a few steps. If for nothing else, the place is definetely worth visiting only for the splendid view of the sea and the green slopes of the surrounding hilly landscape.
The second reason to visit the Monolithos Castle is the beautiful beach under the castle. When arriving at the place, look for a small Fourni Beach signpost on a tree near the path leading to the castle. It points to the left to a small road threading about 10 km on a beautiful green slope and ending one of the most amazing beaches on Rhodes - the Fourni Beach.
And the third reason - on your way, you should definitely visit the charming village of Siana which is really worth seeing.

Zřícenina hradu s funkční kapličkou. Přístup ze silnice po kamenných schodech - nic náročného. Nádherné výhledy do okolí. Vhodné pro děti i seniory. Nutno být opatrný - kameny občas kloužou - vychozeny a pochůzka po zřícenině s ohledme na skálu vyžaduje taky trochu pozornosti. Nevhodné hopsat tam v žabkách a jiné plážové obuvi. Na silnici možnost občerstvení a nákupu suvenýrů.
