Tunnel of Eupalinos
The gem of ancient architecture and hard work - this is how the ingenious system of water supply from the springs of Agiades to the town could be called. It keeps fascinating both its visitors but also architects, especially when thinking that it was carved out in the rock og the Ambelos mountain using only hand tools, without using machines that did not exist 6 hundreds of years ago. Two groups of workers are said to have started digging each one one end to meet in the middle and connect the two worked out caves into one shaft based on precise calculations.
The tunnel is one kilometre long and it was drafted by the architect according to whom it was named. It was constructed under the rule of the cruel but economically successful Polycrates from whom the very Pythagoras had to be hiding from.
The site is open for the public, it is illuminated and generally adapted for the tourists. It is open daily excpt Mondays and can be accessed for a fee. You will find it neat the port of Pythagorion in the foothills of the Spilianis mountain.
