Panagia Episkopi
The Byzantine church of Panagia Episkopi, also called Episkopi Gonias, can be found in the village of Mesa Gonia near the Kamari Beach and it is a charming example of the architecture made by the ancestors of the today´s island inhabitants. It is a true gem of pure lines with a beige facade, little red roofs and exotic looking vaults resembling fairytale sultan palaces from the tales of One Thousand and One Nights. The Church of Panagia Episkopi, dedicated to the Assumption of the Virgin Mary, comes from the 11th century and its rich history is full of religous conflicts and contradictions that often resulted in bloody fighting. Nonetheless, this architectural jewel has been preserved and it is the pride of Santorini.
