Museum of Prehistoric Thera
The museum of prehistory in the capital of Fira focuses mainly on, as its name suggests, the period starting approximately 3 000 years ago, bringing evidence of the varied life on the island during all its existence. The collection of items of our ancient ancestors is very varied, coming mainly from the well-known archaeological site of Akrotiri located in the south of Santorini. Yet the exhibition doesn´t cover only the history but it also refers to the history of the research itseld and the geographical caracteristics of the island from prehistoric times till nowadays. In the section dedicated to excavations and finds from Akrotiri and some other regions of the island, the visitors can admire artistic objects like paintings, golden and marble statues, ceramics and jewellery, but also fossils.
The museum is open daily except national holidays and it can be accessed for a fee (there is a discount for students and children). On some days the museum has a free entrance as well.
