The original fortification, also called the ´Upper Castle´ and built on the mountain of Skaros, has become only a ruin, yet in the ancient times, it was a fundamental place in terms of the island defence. The inhabited area in the castle surroundings even used to be the cnetre of the whole territory, yet due to strong volcanic activity and repeated damage caused by earthquakes, the inhabitants slowly started to move to safer places.
