Thira Archaeological Site
The ruins of the ancient Thira can be found on the rocky hillock of Mesa Vouna (369 m a.s.l.) between the popular beaches of Perissa and Kamari. There is a beautiful view on the sea and the surrounding hills.
Thira was first inhabited by Dorian Greeks under the rule of Theras in the 9th century BC. Later it was colonized by the Romans and Byzantines. The ancient part of Thira was discovered by German archaeologists between 1961 and 1982.
In the place, you can find excavations of both residential and public edifices from the Hellenistic and Roman eras. The main streets passes through two agoras surrounded by ruins of Greek temples - the Temple of Zeus from the 3rd century BC built in Doric style, the Temple of Artemis from the 4th century BC and the sanctuary of Apollo from the 6th century BC. There are also remains of baths, a theatre, shops, Byzantine ramparts and early Christian stone basilica of Agios Stefanos.
The site can be accessed daily except Mondays.
