The lofty edifice of the Monastery of Agia Varvara resembles more an ancient fortification or strong ramparts of a castle, since it is built on a hill and surrounded by tall stone walls. This medieval sacred place can be found only a few kilometres north of the island capital, and at the same time close to another religious site - the Monastery of Agios Ioannis Prodromos. The monastery of Agia Varvara was built in the 17th century and it has been quite well preserved.
