Monastery of Agios Riginos
The uneven stone construction of the Monastery of Agios Riginos resembling more a medieval castle can be found amidst rich green vegetation only 2 km south-west of the Skopelos capital in the island interior. There originally used to stand a Byzantine sanctuary from which only ruins remained, and so, in the 18th century, a new monastery, the today´s Agios Riginos was built in the place. The place carries a legacy of the bishoper Rigina who became a popular saint of all the local believers and the patron saint of the island. The interior of the monastery is even hiding his remains. The monument is open for the public, so anyone can visit it during the summer season.
