Ermoupolis - The Capital

Ermoupolis is a very important place not only in terms of tourism but also the economy.  In the past Ermoupolis used to be the main business centre of the whole Greece, since 1830, industry has developed, and so Syros became one of the main places where ships were produced and goods were transfered. Fortunately the industry is not developing anymore, and so Ermoupolis became a beautiful little town with rich history that you can breathe everywhere. 

Originally Ermoupolis was mainly a town above the bay. It was built at the beginning of the 13th century on the hill of San Georgios, and till nowadays, it preserves its charming and fascinating medieval atmosphere. There is almost no traffic as the whole town has been built on a slope and you can only walk there on staircases. Although the distance from the promenade on the seacoast to the top is about 3 km, it is definitely worth it - once you get there, a view on the whole Ermoupolis and Syros but also the surroundings islands of Tinos, Delos, Mykonos, Paros and Naxos will unfold before you.

What to do in Ermoupolis

Ermoupilis has many beautiful little squares, churches and various buildings like the town hall or the Theatre of Apollo, designed as a miniature of La Scala. Besides that, you will obviously find there many restaurants and tavernas where you can refresh yourself on your walks through the crooked streets, feast your eyes on the beautiful view, and relax in the atmosphere of the ancient times. Once you are on Syros, Ermoupolis is definitely worth visiting.
